No cat should ever be declawed.
Say that to my old couch
I have always had the opinion that no cat should ever be declawed. I consider it to be cruel, and my wife and I have never had any of our cats declawed. I understand your comment about your couch, but if you are so concerned about it that you would mutilate your cat, then maybe you should consider different types of pets like dogs, birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, etc. Just my opinion, but one that I have always felt very strongly about.
Why? They can be free to run around in the back yard fence and go out the doggy door with her dog friends and not be kept inside. She can hunt birds and catch them, bring you mice and ground hog babies. But she doesn’t destroy your furniture. Or scratch the grand babies. And before you wax on about the poor cat remember that you circumcise baby boys and put holes in little girls ears without a thought. And jab them 21+ times before their 2nd birthdays so you can “keep them safe.”
Do I do all those things? You sure seem to know me pretty damn well.
A declawed cat can't scratch your furniture, but it also can't climb a tree to escape a predator (an unfriendly dog/cat/person, or an actual predator if you live in a more rural area). It can, however, still jump a fence, so it's not going to just stay in the fenced backyard and play with the family dogs. And without claws it also won't be able to effectively defend itself against anything hostile.
And while I also enjoyed all your cute little analogies (accusations?), a much better analogy for ripping out a cat's claws and chemically killing the roots would be doing the same thing to all 10 of your fingernails.
If a person is so worried about a cat scratching the furniture or the grandchildren, the responsible thing to do would be to get a different kind of pet instead of mutilating a cat to make it better meet your needs. Again, just my opinion.
