There is just a way to approach these things. And toughen up isn't the way when they can be called Dwarf, Little Person etc. Midget is equivalent to calling a black person a n*gger. Even better is to call people by their name. I get the joke aspect but my kid is 9, I watched Midget Wrestling on WWF but can also see how unnecessary it was to make fun of them in such a cruel way.
