I remember when Dr. Phil ran away from that "bum fights" guy. The "bum fights" guy shaved his head and grew a mustache to look like Dr. Phil. Dr. Phil knew he was going to be exposed as exploiting the less fortunate for entertainment and kicked "bum fights" guy off the show before maximum damage could be dealt. All of Dr. Phil's "awakening" is purely self serving. The crazies served to further his career in entertainment and it was safe to do that when the crazies were an abstraction that could be dismissed. Now that the crazies are normalized, they actually treaten Dr. Phil's career and future prospects. He might very well be awakening because he has no choice, but he is an exploiter exactly in the way "bum fights" pointed out.
