It was a scam when it was created and is an even bigger scam today. In the words of the famous algore, "lockbox".

And if you do your research into Social Security, you'll find out it's just another tax on your income that goes into the general fund.

Bolivia actually privatized pensions in the late 90s and mandated that everyone had to contribute and it greatly benefited the population. Of course, now as socialists are beginning to take over they want it all nationalized again.
