I just posted in a similar thread that a small fraction of athletes die "suddenly" every year. What we don't know is whether this number is higher now, or just being reported more. Similar to shark attacks, which always occur, if the media runs with a "story", it increases the awareness of something, whether that something has actually increased or not.
