Somewhat ironically. The Priesthood and Catholic Religious orders often serve as a dumping ground for the particularly devout Catholics, or just wealthy Europeans and American Elites to more or less dump members of the family who often don’t live up to expectations or have some ‘unforgivable’ flaw. Such as being a Homosexual. Where they can at least either ‘save’ themselves. Or be of some value to the family in gaining influence.
Which at least in part is what’s contributed to the Catholic Church’s less than stellar reputation. As the people who are supposed to be shining examples of the devout. Often aren’t. They just have nowhere else left to go.
And it’s a problem largely self-inflicted by the people who claim to cherish the very same institutions.
They make it so unappealing that very few people choose it. The fact that the Vatican would allow Homosexual and Female priests before simply allowing their priests to marry and have a family is very telling in my opinion. In other words - It's a feature not a bug
People are sticklers for tradition and Doctrine. And there’s no bigger stickler for selective adherence to tradition and Doctrine then the Catholic Church. Even if it’s well past apparent there should be serious discussion among Church leaders about the pros and cons of certain Doctrines and traditions.
It’s “Their Bride/One true love is the church” type of doctrine. And to be fair. At one point centuries ago it may have actually worked. That is of course before the lay people and various Elites/Nobles realized they could eliminate needing to be faced with family disappointments by shunting them off to the Clergy and Religious Life.
Though the marriage rule isn’t completely binding. There’s I think 1 or maybe two regional sects. That while they technically are under the authority of the Roman Church. Have some exceptions to traditional doctrine made in their specific cases.

Almost as if, the modern church is anti life?

When the bible clearly states "forbid not to marry". They simply don't care what the bible says as long as they can control people.
