The article is overwrought. It takes for granted that area denial weapons of an adversary are recent news. The fact of the matter is that the Navy was concerned about supersonic sea-skimming antiship missiles in the 1970s (that was a problem I was informed about during my work at Boeing). It is also the reason for the existence of a carrier battle group, which provides "defense in depth," multiple layers of defense.
