Also ask why so many doctors are not from the U.S. and why there are so many levels between you and the doctor, i.e. nurse, nurse practioner, physician assistant, etc.? In days gone by doctors had a local office, often in their home. Sometimes they had a nurse, often not. The family doctor could do lots of things from exams for school athletics to knowing if you absolutely needed a specialist or not. They could stitch you up, set broken bones, take care of skin ailments, do eye exams and they were good at it. Plus, they'd make house calls if you couldn't get to them.
Compare that to the kind of service you get today. The family doctor was paid a few dollars. They didn't need 5 back office people to process all the insurance claims. They worked with all ages and had good bedside manner. Why? Because they were known and respected in the community. They were on call 24x7 because their patients were their friends. You saw them at church, you knew their family and they knew yours. I miss those days.
