Oh my gosh yes, our washer and dryer are 20 years old now, look like crap but still work great. My Mom has had to replace her newer ones twice already, and she constantly complains about how bad they are. We have a Daewoo microwave from 2002 that is still going strong, yet the new Oster we had only lasted 5 years. My car just turned 18 too, never had any problems. We only replace our phones when they stop supporting them...current one is at least 5 years old.
I had a crappy old smart phone that I made last for over 6 years. Had to eventually get a new one because the thing was fried and couldn't even turn it on, but I was happy I made it last so long. Compare that to most people who get a new phone every year! $1000 every year! Absolutely insane! My old smartphone was less than $200 and I spaced that out for 6 years, which comes to $33 per year. I have no idea why people feel the need to get a new phone every year, or a new car every 5 years, or new appliances, etc., especially if there's nothing wrong with them. They just want the next "new, shiny" thing, and to show off to their friends and neighbors.
