The local scrap yard posted a sign requesting that lithium batteries be removed from anything being recycled. Li batteries are used in a lot of smaller devices. If the batteries can't be run through the mixed shred stream then there are few options outside of landfill disposal.

There isn’t much lithium in those small batteries; but it is very, very pure. Shredding it will mix up whatever is outside with the pure contents.
