First instance IAM aware of SMART was your hard drive in your laptop or PC. A SMART enabled hard drive would report temperature, speed fluctuations on the hard drive, error rates on data transfers, g-forces and anything else that would warn the Sys Admin of a pending failure; so they could transfer data off the drive before it failed, and replace the bad drive with a fresh one
