I always thought Lennon was a massive hypocrite..

But after hearing the theory that Paul McCartney died.. and was replaced with an imposter.. im starting to think that if that happened, it impacted him pretty negatively.. and that he may have identified that and was about to reveal it to the world.. which is why he was shot.

I can't see any other reason they'd want to take him out unless he was going to expose something. Otherwise why not just keep pulling his puppet strings and raking in the dough?
