The only compassionate response to something like this is to demand that the demon be removed from society before it can strike again. It is an existential threat to all people. Even if he remains technically alive, there'll be nothing recognizable as his previous self once it heals. His face will be completely destroyed and his brain has been irrevocably damaged. The way they described it, he may never make it off of the ventilator. That might actually be a mercy.
