Thats one way to describe it. The Philippines recognizes its independence on June 12th 1898. While the US was negotiating with the Vatican to relinquish regional controls, and and working to set up national and regional governments to be overseen by the USA (Filipino Leaders), some of the Rebel factions led by the self declared Dictator Aguinaldo of the first Philippine republic resisted and declared war on the USA while working with the Spanish trying to get them involved. Obviously the USA could not let that stand. As we had just received possession by the treaty of Paris. It was not till 1902 that things were brought into a state the the USA could start working on establishing an american style government for the Philippines, by their people.
It is believed that US intentions were good (by US standards) and our government was discussing a path to self govern at this time.
The rest is pretty clear with several acts by the US government with providing the path to their complete independence.
A lot of my information comes from Filipino sources, one who is a historian. I have been to their independence festivals and a dedicated museum on Luzon.
There is no indication that the US had imperialistic goals, but only a hand in establishing US theoretical views of their government as we assisted to develop of which the insurgent rebels dismissed.
Another faction of the resistance remains today and the guerrilla warfare against the Philippine Government goes on by the Moros in the south.

Yep , this was / is just the Southern Front in the long running Civilizational Conflict much as Kosovo has been the current Northern Front. Naturally that doesn't include the current invasion of the rest of Europe.
