I was 5 in 1984 (😱) and I can attest that it was immeasurably simpler to be so then than it is today. I believe ours was the last generation that can say that. Life for a 5 year old in 1994 was a light year beyond 1984, whereas life in 1974 to 1984 wasn't that hugely different. They definitely pressed the societal destruct nuclear button in the late 80s.
