I think it's kind of funny that we equate a normal debate with relatively stock questions, "softball".

They both had what amounts to the same questions. They didn't need to throw the debate. Joe simply couldn't hold it together.

They could have of course expected this would occur, but to say the debate was thrown is off base. We're just not accustomed to seeing fair, or in this case semi fair events which include Trump.
