The infield fly rule in baseball states that when there are fewer than two outs and runners on first and second or the bases are loaded, if a fair fly ball that can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort is hit, the batter is out regardless of whether the ball is caught, to prevent the defense from intentionally dropping the ball to turn an easy double or triple play.
