Two stories from the period I’d really like the whole truth behind.
Allegedly a Templar Wagon Train under heavy guard barely arrived in the French Port of La Rochelle ahead of the arrest orders and loaded onto a waiting Fleet. Wagon Trains especially then were slow and ponderous. Doubly so with a heavy escort of Men at Arms and Knights.
The Fleet was out to sea by the time French Warships began casting off to pursue. And apparently a storm blew in cutting off the pursuit. While the Templar Fleet escaped with it’s fate and cargo unknown.
Which, if this story is 100% true, would suggest that the order was forewarned of the coming purge and sought to move a large number of treasures out of harms way. And the Goods would have to be considered valuable enough. To justify the senior leadership of the order embarking on a suicide mission to Avignon to meet with Pope Clement. And essentially riding into Phillips clutches. Leaving their enemies none the wiser that the sought after treasures would soon be out of their hands.
And then there’s the Legend of the curse of De Molay. The final publicly known grandmaster of the order. Allegedly before he was burned in March of 1314. He cursed his murderers saying they would follow him within the year. And according to some versions of the tale he added that Phillips bloodline would rule in France no longer.
Pope Clement was dead by April of 1314. King Phillip would follow him in November of 1314. Phillip had at the time of his death. 3 Healthy Sons. But by 1328. King Phillips Bloodline. The Male Branch of the House of Capet would be declared extinct with no surviving heirs.
Both extremely interesting events and suggestive of Spiritual Intervention.
I do suspect they did have word for some. Hopefully the real history will be revealed soon.
