My guess is because working in the plastics industry is nothing unusual. The industry is enormous, and unless he had a really high up position in a well-known company, saying he was a fire fighter is a lot more impressive. It garners more of an emotional response. Plus, it might have been a large part of his life. True, they could have mentioned his job, but these stories want to tug on our heartstrings. Not to sound harsh, Corey should be honored regardless of his profession, but it makes a lot more of an impact to say he was a fire fighter.
