Recreational use To fly a drone for fun as a hobby, you need to pass the FAA recreational drone test (TRUST). This involves completing an online course and quiz that takes about 45 minutes. Drones weighing less than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) are exempt from registration for recreational use.
