They got sold to a German publisher. During the SDI years, Edward Teller made the quip that "Today, 'Scientific American' is neither scientific, nor American." They published critiques of the SDI effort that were just BS, manifesting no understanding of what really was going on.

Scientific American is the poster child of a magazine turning to shit.

Quite a pity. In the 50s and 60s, it was a leading publication. That's one of the real tragedies of a publication going left-wing: something really excellent is replaced with something really bogus. Popular Science was also quite decent in those years, with serious coverage of scientific topics.
