I completely agree with your interpretation—
45 years ago I had an evangelical preacher friend ( he was a wild biker dude from small town Mississippi who married a girl from Sonora Mexico- they had two great kids) tell me exactly that — drink alcohol— do not let it be your God, eat chocolate- do not let it be your God, make money, buy crap etc…. As long as these things are mere silly distractions in your life- fine as long as your main focus in your daily life is God
Yeah we as a generation were really cool - unfortunately some of us decided communism was better than working— most of my generation that I know are still smart / evolved into super techies/ and patriotic ( I know a lot of proud Vietnam war veterans- very well— can’t and will never tell them how they were pretty much raped by their country but that’s another thing) I also know the lazy ass “ hippies “ in their 70’s who still think being stoned all day is cool and the world owes them existence— I saw JFK assassination (met Jim Garrison- Warren commission in person ) hid in school hallway with water bottle under my dads marine issue blanket during Cuban missile crisis- was in Mexico at border town dentist having “cheap “ work when US Blackhawks and F 15’s buzzed the border resulting in dentist shaking his fist at Americans interfering with Libya ( Reagan era)
Trust me I’m 71 — life’s a shitshow- the world is a shitshow- we’re all born at the time we should be to participate or not in the continuation of our cultures and species— Disney— I grew up with “world of Disney “ and have managed to live lots of those beautiful episodes— Disney princesses not so much — always told my oldest when he was 8-9 yo “life’s a bitch and then you die” he gave me a notepad that said “life’s a beach and then you die” I adopted his mantra that day and being happy and
I LOVE this commandment.
To me worship means "over valuing something" that really isn't important.
So worship means to "over value" in my view.
For Example: People love the American flag.
There is nothing wrong with that. But look at what happens.
People start to go to war over a flag and national differences.
If the flag goes away.
God is telling us to let it go. You still will be ok if you follow the 10 commandments.
God doesn't care if a flag is burned. We aren't suppose to over value those things.
When we die. We cannot take a flag or even our cultural identity with us.
well said and agree!
Thanks!
