ZIKA VIRUS AND MICROCEPHALY - OUTBREAK IN BRAZIL 2015

In 2015 there was an outbreak of the Zika virus transmitted by mosquitos that resulted in pregnant infected mothers giving birth to babies with a severe abnormality of small skulls - Microcephaly. Microcephaly is associated with mild to severe lifelong developmental delays and disability.

Microcephaly can affect a baby in different ways, including:

• delayed development or speech
• intellectual disability
• problems with coordination or balance
• seizures
• agitation or aggression
• problems with hearing or vision.
