As for "discussing" politics, they don't do it during meetings, but some do as they sit there waiting for the meeting/ceremony to start, just as casual conversation. But yes, it is not common practice and it is discussed in low tones since it is officially prohibited.
It is said that the appeal of a social group with the (outward facing), innocuous goals of making the community better draw people into it and blind them to what it truly is - Luciferianism and a 'works-based' salvation program that is contrary to faith in Christ being our salvation.
Now THAT is interesting... so do they bar them from discussing extra-masonic politics, or is it moreso just an 'unwritten rule'?

Politics and Religion are strictly prohibited to be discussed during lodge. Although many discussions in the parking lot occur after the meeting.
