Yes, with all the technology, you cannot tell for sure. If I have people I know there, I call them and ask. Otherwise, I check their hotel rates and also their event rates to see if the prices have dropped.
I travel so I tend to check stuff like that anyway. Not going to places with big crowds but you can get an idea when those prices drop.
My business is associated with hotels, in Paris especially. They are indeed slashing their rates - I can confirm through personal experience. Whereas a year ago, in anticipation of the “deluge” of customers, they jacked up the rates. Now they’re dealing with empty rooms.
