Maybe, or maybe not. He was young and needed help, now he either feels he is obligated to pay back that help, or he is forced to do it because he maybe signed some agreements when they promised him that help.

So maybe he really got taken advantage of because he was scared back then and ready to join the first party who promised the help he needed? His fault, or the fault of all those people who maybe cheered him on but didn't open their purses back then?
