Poisoning the well in this case would be a "look here, not there" or a reassurance "Nessel has been investigating", and so I would personally not let my knowing that this is happening cloud my judgement on a group of betrayers possibly running interference.

More information and, hopefully action, is required. Nessel is definitely not one of those to do it.
