Maybe because the crypto he would've had to use can be tracked - from the US and between Iran and whichever country they traded it with.
It can go thru several nodes and you cannot track it.
Supposedly Monero can't be tracked (but who really knows what is possible with the right software or hardware). You or I might not be able to track BTC if masked well enough, but a 1st world nation-state could do it fairly easily.
I know if I was the leader of Iran and was making a deal with the US there is zero chance I would use anything digital.
I can also tell you they can track cash with the serial number. How about gold bars? That works for me. LOL

Of course you can always melt the gold bars into your own bars. I never understood the whole serial number thing. I guess it might catch some amateurs, but Iran probably would've had it melted and re-molded before our plane ever got back to the states.
