Not necessarily, have heard it done by many artists, male and female, always better in Italian. Believe it or not, heard a good rendition done by a couple of COUNTRY artists..
I was thinking of more "high brow" music, but it's true of more contemporary tunes. I've listened to The Beatles in German and Spanish and it's just not the same.
Nobody shall sleep!...
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess
In your cold room
Watch the stars
That tremble with love and with hope
But my secret is hidden within me
My name no one shall know...
No!...No!...
On your mouth I will tell
It when the light shines
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
Nice translation, but far more powerful in Italian IMO.
It's cuz she's a girl

There's a special synergy in music sung in the language for which it was written. A decent translation might get close but it never seems to equal.
Just look at 99 Luftballoons. Should have never been sung in English.
(Yeah, yeah, I know. Not the same. Just listen to the message in the song, though...)
