I believe there is indeed a Ghost in the machine as it were.

Can anyone help? There is a movie but I can't remember the title. They are disgusting a situation where nothing digital, record, video or otherwise is reliable because a sentient AI is able to go in and corrupt data at the code line level.

If this is the situation, WH's and Elon know this. It has spread itself out into every computer on earth.
That's why the power has to go down. And it must be for several days to run out any battery back ups.
