Where in all the scripture does it say it is referring to current timeline and current Israel? It could equally apply to a future date and what we currently have could very well be imposters.
After 2600 years Israel became a nation as God said it would in Ezek. in the latter days. How He would bring it about, He did not say. They probably are imposters that are running the government but to say every one in Israel that are from over a hundred nations is an imposter is impossible. God never said they were a righteous people, on the contrary he calls them many other names. He actually said He was NOT doing it for their sake but He would return them for HIS Holy Names Sake. He made a covenant with Abraham, Issac and Jacob and swore by HIMSELF and the covenant cannot be broken. Prophesy is how we prove God is who He says He is according to Him!
Nowhere in Ezekiel or any other place in Bible does it tell us exactly how much later will the prophesy be fulfilled.
Infact Jesus multiple times says that no one will know when the prophesy will be fulfilled.
BTW, I did a deep dig into the origin of this interpretation of Israel fulfilling the prophecy, and it can be traced back to people like Lord Shaftesbury.
Interesting thing about these people is that they were the same people who both:
Spread this interpretation of the prophecies
Had a key role in creating the country of Israel
And they were all working directly for the British Monarchy under the Palestine Exploration Fund, and had created the full plan of two world wars, Balfour Declaration and as we are seeing now, had a direct role in the horrors of WW2 that lead to the creation of Israel.
However, the biggest problem with your interpretation of this prophecy, which is God can use bad people to fulfil his prophesies is that, its a direct contradiction of Ezekiel 36:
"'For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." (Ezekiel 36:24-27)
This is about the cleansing of all the impurities and purifying the hearts of the actual chosen people. The real prophecy will be fulfilled when the current imposters are destroyed from the root and the real chosen people can come back to that land with a pure heart.
I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel! (Ezekiel 36:30-32)
When it finally happens, the people of Israel will be truly repentant of what they have done.
They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.” Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’ (Ezekiel 36:35-36)
We still have the actual destruction of Israel, before the prophesy is finally fulfilled. From the looks of it, it looks like we are headed there. Perhaps there will be a tactical nuke (God forbid) that will need to be used before this prophesy will be fulfilled.
