Hedge fund companies control the financial media (Like CNBC and Fox Business and online financial sites). They tell them what to say, what stocks to support, which stocks to bash, etc.

So yes, they pump stocks on the daily. They also get their media to bash stocks, then they short the stock, and make money when the stock goes down.

They do a lot more corrupt shit like "cellar boxing"
