Terriers have been bred as rat and mouse catchers for hundreds of years. There were (and may still be) competitions to see whose dog could kill the most rats in the shortest time. The head shaking behavior in dogs with toys or prey is for killing small animals such as rats and mice.

Oh you know about that one about cat and mice. My dog catches mice also and when I told my Chinese friends, they couldn't believe it.
