The Michigan constitution does not allow cities to annex land from their neighboring municipalities, so the city limits of Detroit are the same as they were 80 years ago. Population flight to the suburbs beginning in the 60s left the city of Detroit proper with few people. Redevelopment in the city center has really only taken place over the last 20 years or so. As a result, the city of Detroit is a retail desert.

There are 8 Costcos in Detroit Metro. Livonia, Madison Heights, Roseville, Novi, Commerce Twp, Sterling Heights, Bloomfield Hills, Auburn Hills.
