It's not off key. It does deviate from the traditional melody at times and it has unexpected/interesting harmonies but it did not sound bad to my ears.
Who are you trying to kid? It was horrific. It was definitely off key, no one knew the words and they were not even embarrassed. It was done on purpose to mock our country and We the People.
I'm not sure that you know what 'off-key' means. Didn't know the words? I am at a loss to reconcile that with what I heard. I am not a fan of the dixie chicks but what they did was make a creative "alternative country" arrangement that they sang fine. I wouldn't waste my energy being offended about it.

If they were going for "musical embellishments" why did they send them out without anything to sing to? It was dead silent the whole time.
In musical terms it is called 'a capella' or "without instruments." It is fairly common.
