I am 99.9% sure it was planned as an acapella version. I try to leave some doubt about everything.

The NFL one sounded auto-tuned. That is a technology to make a singer's pitch unnaturally perfect. You have grown up with it so you don't fully realize how a singer's real voice sounds.
