This leads me to believe that one of "Tyler Durden's" helpers was one of the crew, responsible for pissing in the soup and making sure certain hatches were open during the operation...

This thing "rhymes" with "Project Mayhem" in Fight Club, Wombosi/Bourne, Titan sub implosion... and the Titanic (I mean really? Titan vs Titanic?) etc etc - don't even need 6 degrees of separation, it's like one now
