What happens when a demented President dies between the election of his opponent and his inauguration? Is there a way to prevent the vice president from running the country until the inauguration and installing the new President early? I mean, everything about this election has been unusual.

Yes, the House has power to appoint a new Speaker and impeach President and Vice President, which can be done in very rapid order and would effectively install a new, Constitutional President.
