Newark was once a beautiful city with large, lovely homes and wonderful department stores. It has a great museum and public library. Then there was a race riot in the late sixties. This led to white flight. It was also the city where the Republicans lost the ability nationwide to be poll watchers until just a few years ago. I worked there in the eighties and we were paid more to work there. We called it crime pay. It was dangerous to just walk to the train station. Now there is one area where the colleges are located that are policed and fairly safe. A train station was built in that area so you can go to that area. It's very sad.
