Walz's stint as a Command Seargent Major was temporary. The Army selects officers for temporary promotion to serve in critical billets through the brevet program and he may be addressed as such as long as he holds the brevet rank. However when he retires, he reverts to his permanent rank. Therefore, he is a retired Master Sergeant, not a Command Sergeant Major. Even if the promotion were a permanent rank, he would have to serve for two years in that rank or be reverted when he retired. The claim to combat is not nuianced. Either he did or didn't.
