Anyone with basic knowledge of 19c American literature can see immediately that this is steeped in 19c Hawthornian/Melvillian/Poe-ean dark gothic (what's the word for these guys? It escapes me, but they were the anti-transcendentalists. Professor Griffin forgive me!).
