This smells like a stolen primary to me. If you saw 20:1 signs in favor of the losing candidate, it might cause too many question.
I have seen hundreds of signs for the other guy & only one for our incumbent governor during the primary. Also the incumbent told people he had no chance of losing (even though he needed to get signatures to overturn/force a popular vote after the caucus).
