No, why would they be? Semiautomatic AK are as freely available as semiauto AR15s. Hell you can still buy parts kits and build them in the US. The only restriction are if they're full auto, in which the same rules apply to AKs and they do anything else.
Controlled but not illegal. Lots of people got em. You should watch you tubes of the machine gun show in Kentucky sometime.
Then theres the criminal element -- Well you know.
AKs are one of the most user friendly, low maintenance weapons made and produced in vast quantities.

I knew a guy years ago that had one, but I thought it was illegal to have a "Russian" weapon, I can always be wrong:D
There has been an import ban on Russian arms and ammo for the last few years, but anything that was imported before then is unrestricted.
I believe this weapon is now made all over the world. Like I said it is one of the most user friendly and durable weapons ever made and it is so numerous there isnt really a reason to go to the manufacturer.
