A lot of them just choose to live in their own world, ignoring everything that is going on around them, as long as it doesn't affect them. They just don't want to hear that everything is stinking rotten, lest it ruin their "happy" life. That's their "defense" against anything that may go against their smoke-screened world. Truly NPCs that have lulled to sleep, and I happen to live with one.
