E4's are the doomsday plane. There are 4 there were only two electronically hardened for EMP but upgrades have been in progress for a few years. The home base is usually Offutt AFB Omaha. The runways have been resurfaced while the E4's were temporary at Lincoln Airport. The Secretary of Defense will on occasion use the E4's for whatever they use them for...which should induce some pucker factor.
The main runway at Lincoln Airport (LNK) in Nebraska is Runway 18/36, and it is approximately 12,901 feet (3,932 meters) long. Absolute monster. It was actually one of the space shuttle backup landing sites if it was ever needed
The 747 had such a massively heavy lift capability it piggybacked the shuttles. One of BING BANG BOEING's better achievements.
I remember that. It was pre-DEI and look what they could do back then. The shuttle didn't fall off or anything!
And made it back to earth...routinely.
I have toured inside that very 747 at NASA HQ in Houston! It was so neat to see.
I should add that the airframes are 747 which we don't see regularly anymore. They require a long runway and when taking off they can appear to be standing still. They're big.
That's what made me decide to post after being dormant for about a year lol. He said they weren't scheduled for testing, said he had no idea what it was doing out there and had never seen it go that low or slow before.
