Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Last I heard Hurricane Milton was Cat 3,
now it's Cat 5.
I have family in the direct path of Milton in Florida, I feel helpless that I'm not there to help them. I've offered many times to come stay with us, I mean really, they know it goes without saying they are always welcome to stay with us. My daughter, grandchildren & sister are going to be hit hard. They have to evacuate, but don't want to go too far away that they can't go back to their homes to see if it's still standing. But driving to us is a whole day drive. My sister says the airport will be closing at 9am tomorrow.
My sister said with Helene (they got the bad outer bands) even her inside doors were shaking. She has an older home, but it's made of cinderblock, she's mostly worried about windows & roof. We already know she will have water coming into certain rooms, it's just a matter of how much water and will it overflow into the rest of the house. She is beside herself trying to get things done by herself. She had to come home on her lunch break today to rearrange tarps and sandbags before going back to work. She still needs to seal (foam seal) outer doors, but it's been raining there for a few days now making it difficult.
My daughter and grandchildren may go to a shelter or a friend's house, they definitely can't stay where they are. I told that her and the kids can come here, but she won't come here because it's too far and her car won't make it here and the airline that flies directly to us are sold out and she doesn't have the money anyway. Would offer to make hotel arrangements for 2 nights a few hours north but I don't think she would go, and most of the hotels are already sold out in Gainesville as of last night. I think they all fear they won't be able to get back in the area if they go too far away. I'm worried for them.
Sorry so long I'm just venting because I feel so helpless that I'm not there to help them, not that I personally can do much physically, I still feel like a bad mom & sister that I'm not there with them and can't make them come here where it's safe. It's hard as a mom not to be able to help your child or sister (I'm the older sister & was my job growing up to look after her).
Please friends, add them to your prayers that they will be safe! 🙏
Could they go south instead?
can they drive up to Walmart and just camp at parking lot for a couple days?? or the parks
Seems more dangerous than staying in their home.
Wth..Milton must be PMS'ing
