We've never had a problem with that and we have fabric couch and chairs...but we have area rugs on our hardwood floors and they occasionally scratch those but they love those cardboard scratching pads we place on floor. I throw a blanket over our couch not because they scratch but to keep it clean because it's cream colored so you might try that if you get another kitty. Ours are indoors only and they are not declawed cause i could never do that...would rather have scratched furniture...kek!
