I am not sure they were damaged by the war. Its quite possible that their damage happened long before the war, purely by the generic media propaganda aimed at destroying the people's minds.
This also reminds me of the White Feather phenomenon, where girls would give young men out of uniform during the WW1, with the implication that those men were cowards for not going and dying for their country.
