Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Is there a good vpn that's free or really cheap? I looked at zenmate and it looks like you're giving them access to everything. are they all like that? what can be trusted?
Surfshark VPN
Just remember that when you use a VPN, the VPN provider would be able to know exactly which sites you are visiting, and associate it with your real info based on your billing details.
Additionally, for some VPN providers you end up having to install their client software on your PC or phones, which also can become a vulnerable point.
Always ask yourself, why you want to use VPN. Its a very important question.
Is it because you want to protect yourself from your ISP? Remember, you are transferring your privacy from ISP to VPN provider.
Is it because you want to protect your online activity from the government? VPN does not help you one tiny bit here. If govt asks them, they will hand over your entire history without so much as a squeak.
Is it because you are worried about malware on random sites? VPN does not help you with a lot of the malware. Far more important in protecting from malware is your actions as a user.
Is it because you want to protect your IP address from the sites you visit? Legit reason to use VPN
Is it because you want to access services that are available only from certain geo locations? Legit reason to use VPN
Is it because you want to access questionable services? Just assume that the VPN provider, the hackers and the government will know what you are accessing.
If you still buy VPN service, use one that accepts cryptos, so they dont have your real details. Vanwatech is one of the providers who you can use without providing your real details, and using crypto. They service is not great, however.
Alternative would be to buy a server hosting, and install your own VPN server on it. This is the best option where you are in control and you can protect your privacy from both the government, ISP, VPN provider and random websites. There are lot of instructions explaining how to do it, and you can get a decent shared server hosting for as little as $20 per month that is suitable for this. You can even run a webserver or some other server on it for your personal use.
great summary, thank you
The VPN market is dominated by 3 big players and all of them are controlled by M*ssad. This was an article on RT a couple of days ago.
