David Lynch answers that question exactly at 26 minutes in... better than I could have stated myself.

While there are literally thousands of books, videos and other materials on meditation, none of them are specifically, Transcendental Meditation.

I'm not going to tell you that you couldn't achieve something similar on your own, but the chances are not as good as being taught how to do it correctly.
